What is College?
College, also known as a private college, is small, independent tertiary education provider in Australia. Private college offers a select range of courses in a particular field, such as hospitality, business management and etc. At the higher education level, courses may be structured in a similar way to university courses. While it is more common for private colleges to offer specialised degrees in vocational areas such as small business management or hospitality, some also provide broader generalist degrees in areas such as business and allow students to hone in on a particular specialisation or major. At the VET level, private colleges follow the same nationally recognised training packages that are completed at TAFE institutes across Australia, with students required to meet each competency before completing their qualification. These private colleges vary in price depending on the school but they all basically offer program that can range from 3 months to 3 years.
Qualifications from College
Students will be able to get various qualifications if they complete their course at the private colleges successfully. Private colleges offer Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses, higher education courses and a mix of both. At the VET level, private colleges offer Certificate I to IV, diploma and advanced diploma alongside government-funded TAFE institutes and are classified as Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). At the higher education level, some of them provide bachelor degree even higher. Credits from these courses may be able to be transferred to universities or TAFE, but it depends on the college and its relationship with Australian Universities and TAFE.
